Carlos "the Jackal"**

The terrorist who was public enemy number one in the seventies, and finally sentenced to life imprisonment in France in 1997 after a string of attacks throughout Europe, is to go on trial today in Paris forty three years after an attack there.
He is accused of bombing a fashionable restaurant and shopping address in the French capital in 1974 in which two people died and many were injured. Carlos (so called because he is from South America) denies involvement, but whatever the outcome of the three week trial he will remain in prison for previous convictions.
** he was dubbed "the Jackal" after a copy of Frederick Forsyth's novel "The Day of the Jackal", about an attempt by a terrorist to assassinate President de Gaulle, was seen amongst his possessions.
