Counting red kites

Milan Royal: red kite
The annual census of these birds will take place this weekend (7th and 8th January). last year some 5300 birds were counted in the Pyrenees by 180 observers. The birds are protected yet hunting and chemical sprays still remain their biggest enemies. A scheme to re-introduce them to the Cotswolds in south east England some 25 years ago has made them a familiar sight in semi-rural areas, but here we see them only occasionally, the various buzzards being much more common.
